Spice Bag for the Soup

Have you realized how “instant” we have become? Instant noodles, Instant Messages, Instant drinks, instant yeast, instant dinners are just some of the instant things that come to my mind instantly. Of course, there are other words we like as well associated to the word instant. Here’s some and I’m sure you can come up with more; now, immediately, pronto, real time. We look for shortcuts and we love time savers. We have become so efficient with the way we use and spend our time that it’s amazing how we still complain that we don’t have enough time! What would my great great great great grandmother say about us - not that I ever knew her!? I just feel that some times, it would take so little to actually do things DIY. That doesn’t mean I think we need to go back to doing things from scratch all the time, but I just wonder how something so simple as a spice bag can actually become a product to be sold in stores when all you need is some cheesecloth and nimble fingers.;)

Anyway, just a little thing or two about spice bags. In some dishes, especially in soups or broth which you want to serve clear but is infused with the aroma of spices, using a spice bag is convenient. Imagine trying to fish out small little spices like cloves out of a huge pot of broth. Or having to strain a whole pot of beef broth just to remove the spices or the unfortunate event that you missed one of those mischievous spices only to realize it found it’s way into your guest’s bowl. Well of course there are ready made spice bags and little metal mesh balls you could use. But in case you don’t have any of these and you figured it’s not really worth it, here’s how to make your own cheesecloth spice bag. Enjoy the video!
