Fried Wonton!! YUMMY!!!

We used to frequent Sakura (at Compass Point), a restaurant which serves Halal Thai-Chinese cuisine, on weekends or on one of those weekday nights when I had not a single ounce of energy left to cook. One of our favourite side dishes was the Fried Wontons served with a yummy black sticky sweet soya sauce. Suddenly craving for that side dish and obviously aware that there are no Halal eateries serving the dish in anywhere near me, I decided to try my hand at it. I must say, that for a first timer, the venture proved successful and what is more interesting is to know that I can make a total of 32 wontons using only 2 chicken breasts! Considering all the ingredients that went into the wontons, I think being charged at a restaurant for what is definitely less than 32 wontons is close to daylight robbery! Well, anyway, here’s a quick recipe which you can prepare beforehand and leave it in the refrigerator for the next day. It also happens to be a great appetiser, side dish or a sinful tea-time snack! But just a note to myself, I’ll need to make mine a little less brown and more GOLDEN brown the next time!

Ingredients:

2pcs chicken breasts - chopped finely
35 wonton wraps*  (Keep chilled until you are ready to use as they harden very quickly)
Oil enough to cover at least one side of the wonton (shallow frying)
some water in a bowl - for glueing the wonton wraps

To make the filling:
(mix all these ingredients with the chopped chicken)
3 cloves garlic - chopped finely/grated
1 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp soya sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1/2 tsp white pepper
1tbsp corn flour
1 egg - lightly beaten
salt to taste

Method:

1) In a bowl, prepare the filling as stated above.
2) Take 1/2 teaspoonfuls of the filling, place in the center of a wonton wrap.
3) Wrap the wonton as shown in the video below .
4) Heat oil in pan. On medium high heat, fry the wontons for about 5 - 8 min or until golden brown.
(TIPS:
- The oil should not be too hot as it will burn the wrap.
- Place wontons one at a time into the oil so that they will not stick to each other.
)
5) Remove and drain. Serve hot with chilli sauce or sweet kicap.

My kids just bite into them without the sauce! YUMMY!!

* You can buy these from Asian stores in the refrigerated section. The spelling on the package may differ eg. Won Ton Skins, Wonton Wraps etc. Just to reassure you….they are the same.:)
